2022 Silver Stocking Project

We need:

Socks – Who doesn’t like a new pair of socks to keep their feet warm?  This is one of our most requested items each year. We deliver 4 times a year and alway include socks.

Tissues – These are especially needed during the winter months. Boxes and small individual tissue packages are always welcome.

You Can Make A Difference

Holiday Depression

Elderly nursing home residents may have no family and no friends left alive. The holidays can revive memories of what once was and stoke feelings of loneliness, isolation, and depression. According to the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation (GMHF), during the holiday season, the elderly may feel more acutely the passage of time; the absence of parents, siblings, and friends who have died; and the distance of loved ones who have moved away. When traditional celebrations and rituals no longer occur, the holidays may seem empty.

Deliver Some Cheer

If you would like to feel you’ve really made a difference in someone’s life this holiday season, visit a nursing home.

  • Just visit! Take a couple of friends along and sing holiday songs with the residents.
  • Take in some cookies to share (speak to the administrator or activities director first).
  • Make some holiday cards for the residents.

When You Drop By For A Visit

Remember that the care facility is home to the older adults and you should respect their privacy and living space as much as possible. When you’re entering a room, even if the door is open, knock first.

One-on-one visits will vary. You may find residents in the lobby, hallway, gar community room, or their individual rooms. Start a conversation by introducing yourself: “Hello. My name is… Would you like me to visit with you today?” Almost everyone will say yes. Your interaction will be short or long depending on the person. Even a few minutes can brighten a resident’s day.
